The Arizona racetrack of Fairgrounds first opened for organised racing in 1938. It is not to be confused with its more illustrious, similarly named racetrack, in Louisiana. The Fair itself was first organised in 1884 and has been held annually ever since. The Fairground is situated in Phoenix in Encanto Village and has been on its present site from at least 1905, having previously been on a site between the Salt River and Central Avenue. This early site was abandoned after the Salt River flooded in 1891, and in 1905 a wooden grandstand was constructed and an 8 furlong oval racetrack mapped out.
